EFT Technique Question

EFT Set Up – Why and How?

I was recently asked a great EFT technique question about Emotional Freedom Tapping, by a reader.  She was fine tuning the best way to use my Growing Up method.

Is it necessary to perform the karate chop set up between doing the dumping/dreaming and deciding affirmations?

If not great, but if so what would you recommend I affirm to myself?

First, it’s important to understand the purpose of the EFT Set-Up.

The original purpose is to relax “Reversals.” In EFT lingo, a reversal is conscious or unconscious resistance to change.

The purpose of doing EFT is to change something.

If you didn’t want to change the way you feel or the way you are acting or the way things are happening in your life, you wouldn’t be inspired to do EFT tapping.

*     *     *     *     *

And let’s face it, change can be scary.

Or threatening.

It often doesn’t feel safe to change.

You also know that changing emotions, thoughts and behaviors is not that easy. If it was easy, we wouldn’t need a practice like EFT in the first place.  And we wouldn’t need to fine-tune our EFT technique to find the most effective methods.

Why Do We Do the EFT Set Up?

The Set Up is part of the original EFT technique.  We do the Set-Up to help relax those Inner Lifeguards and gatekeepers of the status quo of our Life.

When  doing the Set Up, here’s what  we are basically saying,

“There’s something I want to change about you, but I want you to know I love you anyway.”  Or,

“I’m going to ask you to make a big change that might make you scared and back away. So come here, so I can give you a reassuring hug.” Or,

“I don’t like this thing about you and I’m afraid you’ll balk if I just tell you to change.  So I’m trying my best to feel loving and accepting, because I’m hoping that if you feel loved and accepted, you’ll be willing to let go of this thing that’s causing all kinds of problems in my life.”

Doing the Set Up Between Parts of the Growing Up Method

Doing the karate chop set-up between Dumping and Dreaming or between Dreaming and Deciding is optional (Heck, I know a couple of famous EFT people who’ve ditched the Set Up altogether!).

With this Growing Up method, the set-up is less necessary. That’s because the purpose of the set up is to eliminate subconscious resistance to change. And since the whole Growing Up process is designed to calm that resistance, it works equally well without doing the set up between the parts.

If you choose to do a set-up, between the three parts, here are some options.

Options for Set Up between Dumping and Dreaming:

Even though part of me is still holding onto this problem, what if I could let go, just a little?

Even though I’m still a little scared to completely let this go, wouldn’t it be nice if I could?

Even though I can’t imagine what I would be like without this problem, what if I could just consider the possibility?

Even though some of me is still wanting to struggle, what if I can picture it being fun and easy?

Options for Set Up Between Dreaming and Deciding

Even though there’s a small part of me that can’t imagine who I would be without this problem, I now choose to embrace that new me.

Even though I’m still a little scared, I’ve decided I can change while embracing that fear.

Even though I still feel a little resistance to change, I now choose to trust my abilities and move forward with calm and confidence.

Even though there’s a small part of me that still wants to make this hard, I chose to be surprised at how easy and fun it can be.

I hope this helps expand your understanding of the purpose of the EFT Set Up and gives you some good options for doing it.

As always, I appreciate the way your questions stretch my mind and benefit everyone.  Keep them coming!
