Stress and Pain
Stress is the emotional and physical strain caused by our response to pressure – either from the outside world or internal.
Common stress reactions include tension, irritability, inability to concentrate, and a variety of physical symptoms that include pain in any part of the body.
Two of the most common places to manifest stress in the form of pain are back pain or headaches.
It’s impossible to live without some stress. And it wouldn’t be healthy to be entirely stress free. And we wouldn’t want to! Because without any stress at all, life would be too boring and our bodies wouldn’t be healthy.
But if stress gets out of control, it harms your health, your relationships, and your enjoyment of life.
Emotions Are Stored in the Body as Pain
Massage therapists are familiar with this scenario. The masseuse is massaging her client’s lower back and suddenly the client bursts into tears. When the massage therapist asks what happened, the client responds,
“When you massaged that tender area on my right side, I suddenly had the most vivid memory from my childhood and all this emotion just welled up in me.”
The body, in its wisdom protects us from being swamped with overwhelming emotions. But the emotion, which is energy, must go somewhere. So if we don’t process it, release it or clear it, it gets stored in the body.
This stored emotional energy is often felt as pain.
I’ve had experience with this when working with clients too. I have worked with many clients who felt sudden pain in the head, arm, leg or back when they felt the emotional pain from a certain memory.
What is EFT?
EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a form of psychological acupuncture that uses the fingertips instead of needles. When you tap on the energy meridians, you move blocked energy in the body’s chi or energy system.
This relieves stress and allows the resolution of emotions that have been stored in the body in the form of physical pain.
How is EFT Done?
EFT is done by tapping certain pain relief points with the fingertips. The tapping is done at the same time you recall the emotions about the issue or from the memory.
When the emotions are felt at the same time the meridian points are stimulated by tapping, the energy of the emotion is moved and transformed.
Both emotional and physical pain is relieved in the process.
